Ingredients
Cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup butter
- 3 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 cup Coca Cola (regular, not diet)
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Frosting:
- 1/2 cup butter
- 3 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup Coca Cola
- 4 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the cake.
- Prepare Cake Mixture: In a saucepan, heat the butter, cocoa powder, and Coca Cola together until the butter is melted and the ingredients are well combined. Then pour this hot mixture over the flour and sugar in a mixing bowl.
- Add Wet Ingredients: To the flour and sugar mixture, add the buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla extract. Mix everything thoroughly until you have a smooth batter free of lumps.
- Bake Cake: Pour the batter into a greased or lined baking pan and bake in the preheated oven for about 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Prepare Frosting: While the cake is baking, melt the butter with cocoa powder and Coca Cola in a saucepan. Once melted and combined, gradually stir in the powdered sugar until the frosting has thickened but is still pourable.
- Frost Cake: Remove the cake from the oven and while it is still warm, pour the cooked frosting evenly over the top. Allow the frosting to set before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Use regular Coca Cola for the best authentic flavor; diet versions will alter the taste and texture.
- Allowing the frosting to set ensures it thickens properly on the cake.
- Buttermilk helps tenderize the cake and adds slight tanginess that complements the sweetness.
- For easier slicing, let the cake cool slightly but frost while still warm.
- Store any leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerated for up to a week.
