Ingredients
Cake Batter
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Topping and Sauce
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 1/4 cups hot water
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8-inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Pour in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract into the dry ingredients and stir everything until the batter is smooth and evenly mixed.
- Pour Batter: Spread the batter evenly in the prepared baking dish, leveling it gently with a spatula.
- Prepare Topping: In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cocoa powder for the topping and sprinkle this mixture evenly over the cake batter.
- Add Hot Water: Carefully pour the hot water over the top of the batter and topping mixture without stirring. This step allows the pudding to form underneath as it bakes.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the top layer is set and appears like a soft cake.
- Serve: Allow the cake to cool slightly and serve warm. It pairs wonderfully with ice cream or whipped cream for added indulgence.
Notes
- Do not stir after pouring the hot water; this ensures the pudding forms properly beneath the cake layer.
- Best served warm to enjoy the full pudding effect.
- Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before serving.
