A warm, comforting apple dessert featuring tender, spiced apples baked under a golden, buttery oat crumble. This classic apple crisp with oat topping is perfect served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream, ideal for cozy fall evenings or festive gatherings.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (Granny Smith + Honeycrisp work well)
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg

For the Oat Topping:

  • 1 cup (100 g) old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ¾ cup (95 g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (150 g) brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup (115 g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  2. Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss everything well to ensure the apples are evenly coated with the spices and sugar. Spread this apple mixture evenly in the greased baking dish.
  3. Make the Oat Topping: In a separate bowl, mix together the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Then, use a pastry cutter or fork to cut the cold, cubed butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture forms coarse crumbs resembling wet sand.
  4. Assemble the Crisp: Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apple filling in the baking dish, covering all the fruit.
  5. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the oat topping is golden brown and crisp.
  6. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow the apple crisp to cool slightly. Serve warm, ideally topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • Serve with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, or whipped cream for added richness.
  • Add ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts into the oat topping mixture for extra crunch and flavor.
  • Mix cranberries or pears into the apple filling to vary the texture and taste.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days; reheat gently before serving to maintain texture.
