Ingredients
Batter
- 2 cups flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ cup butter, softened
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 ½ cups chopped apples (preferably tart varieties like Granny Smith)
Cinnamon Sugar Swirl
- ⅓ cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
Glaze
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 1 tbsp milk
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 °F (175 °C) to ensure an even baking temperature.
- Cream Butter and Sugar: In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. This creates a smooth base for the batter.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the milk, making sure everything is well combined.
- Add Dry Ingredients: Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt until just combined, careful not to overmix to keep the bread tender.
- Fold in Apples: Gently fold the chopped apples into the batter, distributing them evenly without breaking them down.
- Layer Batter and Cinnamon Sugar: In a greased loaf pan, pour half of the batter, sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar mixture on top, then add the remaining batter and finish with the rest of the cinnamon sugar. Use a knife or skewer to swirl the layers together, creating the signature swirl effect.
- Bake: Place the loaf pan in the preheated oven and bake for 50 to 55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Prepare and Add Glaze: Mix powdered sugar and milk until smooth to make the glaze. Drizzle over the cooled bread for a sweet finishing touch.
Notes
- Use tart apples such as Granny Smith to balance the sweetness of the bread.
- The glaze is optional but recommended for an authentic apple fritter taste.
- Make sure not to overmix the batter to maintain a tender crumb.
- Ensure apples are chopped into fairly uniform small pieces for even distribution.
- Store leftover bread wrapped tightly; it stays fresh for up to 3 days.
