Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 tbsp fresh chives, chopped
- ¾ cup buttermilk
Optional Topping
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- ½ tsp garlic powder
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and for easy cleanup.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and black pepper to ensure even distribution of the leavening agents and seasoning.
- Incorporate Butter: Cut the cold unsalted butter into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers until it resembles coarse crumbs. This step helps create the flaky texture.
- Add Cheese and Herbs: Stir in the shredded sharp cheddar cheese along with the chopped fresh parsley and chives, combining evenly throughout the flour mixture.
- Add Buttermilk and Form Dough: Pour in the buttermilk and gently mix just until a soft dough forms. Be careful not to overmix to keep the biscuits tender.
- Shape Biscuits: Scoop or drop spoonfuls of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart to allow for rising.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
- Add Optional Topping: If desired, brush the tops of the hot biscuits with melted butter mixed with garlic powder to add extra flavor and a glossy finish.
- Serve Warm: Serve the biscuits warm as a delicious side to soups, stews, or holiday meals.
Notes
- Keep butter cold for the flakiest biscuits.
- Don’t overmix the dough to maintain tender biscuits.
- Swap herbs based on what you have; thyme or rosemary work well as alternatives.
- Best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated briefly in the oven or microwave.
