Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 (32 oz) bag frozen tater tots
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 8 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon butter or cooking spray (for greasing the dish)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Cook the sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the breakfast sausage, stirring occasionally until fully cooked and no longer pink. Drain any excess grease before proceeding.
- Layer the tater tots: Spread the frozen tater tots in an even layer at the bottom of the prepared baking dish for a crispy base.
- Add sausage layer: Sprinkle the cooked breakfast sausage evenly over the tater tots, distributing it uniformly.
- Top with cheese: Cover the sausage layer with both shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses evenly for a rich, melted topping.
- Prepare egg mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder until smooth and combined.
- Pour egg mixture: Slowly and evenly pour the egg mixture over the entire casserole ensuring it soaks through the layers.
- Bake the casserole: Place the dish uncovered in the oven and bake for 45–50 minutes until the center is set and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Rest before serving: Remove from oven and let it cool for 5–10 minutes to allow the casserole to firm up for easier slicing and serving.
Notes
- For extra crispiness, bake the tater tots alone for 10 minutes before assembling the casserole.
- Add diced onions, bell peppers, or jalapeños to the sausage for additional flavor and texture.
- This casserole can be assembled the night before and refrigerated, then baked fresh in the morning for convenience.
- Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
