Sausage Puff Pastry Bites are a savory, bite-sized appetizer featuring flaky puff pastry wrapped around seasoned sausage for a golden, irresistible treat. Perfect for parties, holidays, or game day, these easy-to-make bites bake to crisp perfection and can be served with mustard or cheese for added flavor.

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 20–24 bites

Ingredients

Pastry

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed

Sausage Filling

  • 1/2 lb breakfast sausage or Italian sausage

Egg Wash

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Black pepper, to taste

Optional

  • Shredded cheese or mustard for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Prepare the Puff Pastry: On a floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry slightly to smooth it out and make it easier to work with.
  3. Cut Pastry Strips: Cut the pastry into strips wide enough to wrap around the sausage comfortably.
  4. Assemble Bites: Lay sausage along each pastry strip and roll the pastry tightly to enclose the sausage completely.
  5. Cut into Bites: Slice the rolled sausage and pastry into bite-sized pieces and place them seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Apply Egg Wash: Whisk together the egg and water, then brush this mixture evenly over the tops of the pastry bites to help them brown beautifully. Optionally, sprinkle lightly with black pepper.
  7. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 18–22 minutes, or until the puff pastry is puffed up and golden brown.
  8. Cool and Serve: Remove the bites from the oven and allow them to cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, optionally with mustard, honey mustard, or shredded cheese.

Notes

  • For a softer filling, use pre-cooked sausage; raw sausage results in a firmer bite.
  • Serve with mustard, honey mustard, or your favorite dipping sauce to enhance flavor.
  • These bites are best enjoyed warm for optimal flakiness and taste.
