Ingredients
Meat
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
Vegetables and Potatoes
- 1 (20–24 oz) bag frozen hash browns, thawed
Dairy and Eggs
- 8 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup shredded Monterey Jack or mozzarella cheese
- 1 tablespoon butter or cooking spray (for greasing the dish)
Spices and Seasonings
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish evenly with butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking and facilitate easy cleanup.
- Cook the sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until it is browned and fully cooked through. Drain any excess grease to keep the casserole from becoming too oily.
- Layer hash browns: Spread the thawed hash browns evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish to form the base layer of the casserole.
- Add sausage layer: Sprinkle the cooked sausage evenly over the layer of hash browns to distribute the savory meat flavor throughout the casserole.
- Top with cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese and Monterey Jack (or mozzarella) cheese evenly over the sausage layer for a rich, gooey topping.
- Mix the egg custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder until fully combined to create the flavorful egg mixture.
- Pour egg mixture: Pour the whisked egg mixture evenly over the layered casserole, allowing it to soak into the hash browns and sausage.
- Bake the casserole: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes. The casserole is done when the center is set and the top is lightly golden brown.
- Rest before serving: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5–10 minutes to firm up, making it easier to slice and serve.
Notes
- For crispier hash browns, sauté them lightly in a skillet before assembling the casserole.
- Add diced onions, bell peppers, or mushrooms for added flavor and extra veggies.
- This casserole can be assembled the night before and baked fresh the next morning for convenience.
- Store any leftover casserole in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
