Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
Wet Ingredients
- 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
- 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Add-ins
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prep Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg until evenly mixed.
- Cut in Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with small pea-sized pieces.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the pumpkin puree, heavy cream, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth and fully combined.
- Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined — do not overmix, as this will toughen the scones.
- Fold in Chocolate Chips: Carefully fold the chocolate chips into the dough, distributing them evenly throughout.
- Shape and Cut Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a circle approximately 1-inch thick. Using a sharp knife or dough cutter, slice the circle into 8 equal wedges.
- Bake the Scones: Arrange the wedges on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes or until the scones are golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the scones from the oven and allow them to cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- For taller, fluffier scones, chill the dough for 10 minutes before shaping and baking.
- If desired, drizzle the cooled scones with a simple glaze made from powdered sugar and milk for added sweetness.
