Juicy, smoky, and perfectly seasoned grilled chicken drumsticks—easy to prepare and full of summer barbecue flavor! This classic American BBQ dish is perfect for outdoor gatherings and family dinners, delivering tender meat with a crispy, flavorful skin.

  • Total Time: 35 mins
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 8 chicken drumsticks

Seasoning & Marinade

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Pat the chicken drumsticks dry with paper towels to ensure the seasoning sticks well. In a large bowl, toss the drumsticks with olive oil and all the seasoning ingredients until evenly coated.
  2. Preheat the Grill: Heat your grill to medium-high heat, between 375–400°F (190–204°C). This temperature range is ideal for cooking chicken through without burning the skin.
  3. Grill the Drumsticks: Place the drumsticks on the grill grates and cook for 25–30 minutes. Turn the drumsticks occasionally to promote even cooking and char marks. Continue grilling until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C), verified with a meat thermometer.
  4. Rest the Meat: Remove the drumsticks from the grill and let them rest for 5 minutes. This allows juices to redistribute throughout the meat, keeping it moist and tender.

Notes

  • For deeper flavor, marinate the drumsticks overnight in the oil and spice mixture before grilling.
  • If you don’t have access to a grill, bake the drumsticks at 400°F (204°C) for 35–40 minutes until cooked through.
  • Optionally, brush the chicken with barbecue sauce during the last 5 minutes on the grill for a tangy glaze.
