A classic comfort food favorite featuring tender Italian-style meatballs simmered in marinara sauce, topped with melted mozzarella cheese, and loaded into toasted sub rolls. This easy meatball sub recipe is perfect for quick dinners or game-day sandwiches and delivers a delicious, hearty meal in under 30 minutes.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 sandwiches

Ingredients

Meatball and Sauce

  • 12 cooked meatballs (homemade or frozen)
  • 2 cups marinara sauce

Sandwich

  • 4 sub rolls
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Fresh parsley or basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for toasting the rolls and melting the cheese.
  2. Simmer Meatballs: In a saucepan, combine the cooked meatballs with the marinara sauce. Heat over medium heat until the meatballs are thoroughly warmed and the sauce is simmering, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  3. Prepare Garlic Butter: Mix the melted butter with garlic powder to create a flavorful garlic butter spread for the rolls.
  4. Toast Rolls: Brush the sub rolls evenly with the garlic butter mixture. Place them on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for about 5 minutes until slightly golden and crisp.
  5. Assemble Subs: Remove the toasted rolls from the oven. Fill each roll evenly with the warm meatballs and marinara sauce. Top each sandwich generously with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  6. Melt Cheese: Return the assembled sandwiches to the oven and bake for 5–7 minutes or until the mozzarella is melted and bubbly.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Optionally sprinkle with fresh parsley or basil before serving. Serve the meatball subs warm for the best taste experience.

Notes

  • For a different flavor, use provolone or parmesan cheese instead of mozzarella.
  • Chicken or turkey meatballs can be substituted for a lighter meat option.
  • These meatball subs store well and make great meal prep lunches.
