Classic Chicken Parmesan features crispy breaded chicken cutlets topped with rich marinara sauce and melted mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. It’s a comforting, restaurant-quality Italian-American dish that’s easy to make at home, perfect for weeknight dinners or special occasions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Chicken:

  • 2 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Breading & Coating:

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Other:

  • ½ cup olive oil (for frying)
  • 1½ cups marinara sauce
  • 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh basil or parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prep Chicken: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Slice the chicken breasts horizontally to create thinner cutlets, then pound them to an even thickness. Season each piece evenly with salt and black pepper.
  2. Prepare Breading Stations: Arrange three shallow bowls: one with all-purpose flour, another with beaten eggs, and a third with a mixture of Italian-style breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning.
  3. Coat Chicken: Dredge each chicken piece first in the flour, shaking off excess, then dip into the beaten eggs, and finally coat thoroughly with the breadcrumb and cheese mixture.
  4. Fry Chicken: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry each breaded chicken cutlet for about 3 to 4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crisp, then remove from skillet.
  5. Assemble and Bake: Place the fried chicken pieces in a baking dish. Spoon marinara sauce evenly over each cutlet, then sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired. Serve hot with your favorite sides.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, substitute Italian-style breadcrumbs with panko breadcrumbs.
  • You can air-fry the breaded chicken at 375°F for 10–12 minutes before adding marinara sauce and cheese to reduce frying time.
  • Serve Chicken Parmesan with pasta, garlic bread, or a simple green salad for a complete meal.
  • Leftover Chicken Parmesan keeps well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat thoroughly before serving.
